Preparing for Your Baby

While you wait for your little one’s arrival, there’s plenty to do. See below for some simple ways to make sure you’re ready.

Choose a doctor for your baby.

Save their number! While you’re still in the hospital, schedule an appointment within a week after delivery and a second appointment before the baby is a month old.

Take childbirth classes.

These help you and your birthing partner prepare for labor and birth.

Take parenting classes.

These help you learn to care for your baby.

Tour the hospital where you plan to deliver.

If possible, pre-register while you’re there.

Do you have other children?

Plan childcare for when you deliver. Need help? Call Child Care Aware at 1-800-424-2246.

Do you have a ride to the hospital?

Your health plan can help you find a ride. The phone number is on the back of your ID card.

Set up a safe place for your baby to sleep.

Learn more about safe sleep.

Wash the baby’s clothes and sheets.

Be sure to use fragrance-free detergent.

Make a meal plan for after you deliver.

Ask friends and family to help.

Get an approved car seat. (You won’t be allowed to take your baby home without it!)

Call your health plan if you need help getting one. Find where you can get your car seat installed properly. Your hospital may be able to help.

Decide which birth control is best for you before you deliver.

You may be able to get it started before you leave the hospital. Ask your doctor!
